Sacred Indian Burial Grounds
The Tallige Cherokee Nation has worked for years to protect the Bird Effigy Mound and associated burial grounds. Plans are now underway to create a Trust in which the Bird Effigy Mound and surrounding burial grounds will be placed. Our ancestors have lived and buried their dead on this site since time immemorial. This is the site of the historic Sinnioto Village, the hub of pre-historic and historic Woodland Indian activity for approximately 5,000 years in the Ohio Valley. This was a large town site covering both banks of the Ohio River and was used as a Peace Town where people of all nationalities would be protected and the business of trade between the different tribes could be accomplished in safety. The European traders knew Sinnioto as Lower Shawnee Town. The Tallige Cherokee Nation has leased the site of Sinnioto from the Scioto County Commissioners for many years. We originally leased the land to protect the Sacred Bird Effigy Mound and burial grounds from development. We recovered reburied the remains of our ancestors that grave robbers had removed. Then we recreated a small village (ca. 1800) on this site for the education of the general public. We hold regular traditional ceremonies on this sacred land. The work is not over, but only just beginning. We are working to establish a Foundation to administer the Trust of this land that is Sacred to all Native Americans that they may be protected in perpetuity. We look forward to working with the Scioto County Commissioners to establish a foundation that will hold this land in trust for future generations. We still need your contributions to insure this land will be protected.
